I oppose H.R. 402: To provide for the retention of the name of Mount McKinley. because...a Republican in the Senate wants "Denali"; a Democrat in the House wants "McKinley". Let's call it Mt. Designation, in honor of the uncontrolled compulsion Congress has, to "designate" the names of post offices, federal office buildings, elements of physical geography, etc. etc.

I oppose H.R. 402: To provide for the retention of the name of Mount McKinley. because... It does seem with everything that needs serious attention within the federal government it is a bit ludicrous that taxpayer dollars are being used to deal with the name of a mountain. Why is a bill needed to keep it named Mt. McKinley? If the State of Alaska feels like the name should be changed to the original name Denali, then let the taxpayers of Alaska determine if they want to pick up the tab related to any costs associated with such a change. This should not come from federal tax dollars. Here we are with the biggest deficit in the history of our country, and people have the audacity to bring up for vote something that really does not amount to a hill of beans in the long run.

I oppose H.R. 402: To provide for the retention of the name of Mount McKinley. because Alaska should be allowed to name its own landmarks. Regardless of consideration for the state's population, Denali is the traditional name for the mountain, and a direct translation of it was used even when Alaska was under Russian control. In cases like this, tradition should override 18th century politics.
