I support H.R. 6693 (112th) ("To amend the Animal Welfare Act to provide for the protection of birds, rats, and"). Before I adopted rats as pets, I had no knowledge of their intelligence, compassion and capacity to grieve. A special rat I adopted became more than a pet to me and grew to know when I was suffering from depression and needed comforting. When I opened her cage door, she would run to my side as I lay on my couch in misery, and snuggle her way up between my arms to my neck and face area. She licked the tears from my face and wouldn't leave my side until I had stopped crying. Rats suffer when their companions die. They grieve by withdrawing, often hiding in a corner, not eating or drinking. Some take days to recover, some take weeks and some die of grief. Rats have been proven to show compassion toward companions that are put through electric shock. We would never treat humans with these characteristics the way we treat rats. Each rat offers something to humanity beyond acting as lab specimens. I strongly support reintroduction of H.R. 6693(112th) (To amend the Animal Welfare Act to provide for the protection of birds, rats and"). Please save these sentient rats.

I support H.R. 6693 (112th) ("To amend the Animal Welfare Act to provide for the protection of birds, rats, and") because I have 8 pet rats who I totally adore. They are very loving, playful, smart, clean, and each has an individual personality. They are my beloved pets and get treated like children. Please let them have the rights that other animals have. Thank you, Carol Souva

I support H.R. 6693 (112th) ("To amend the Animal Welfare Act to provide for the protection of birds, rats, and") because...I have 3 pet rats whom I love. They are very sweet, playful, intelligent, and clean, and each has an individual personality. They are my beloved pets and get treated like children. These animals are feeling beings. They feel pain, both physical and mental. Just like dogs, they bond with their ratty friends and with their human friends. They enrich the lives of their owners. Please let them have the rights that other animals have. Whether these species are in a pet shop or laboratory, they do not deserve to be neglected or allowed to suffer needlessly. Proper care in a pet shop makes the pet rat, for example, a good pet. Enjoying and learning the responsibility of having a loving pet rat is an educational experience for a child and a joy for anyone. Healthy, well-behaved pets are only possible with proper care from birth and in the pet store. Thank you! Raquel Cintron
