  1. Issue Spotlight: Dr. Shakil Afridi

    Dr. Shakil Afridi, the Pakistani doctor who assisted the United States in locating Osama bin Laden, was found guilty of treason by a Pakistani court and sentenced to serve 33 years in prison. Several Members of Congress have introduced legislation related to Dr. Afridi, and many more have issues statements, including Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-MA)Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.)Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Carl Levin (D-MI) and Rep. Tom Rooney (FL-16).

    • S 3269 provides that no United States assistance may be provided to Pakistan until Dr. Shakil Afridi is freed.
    • S 3260 provides that no United States assistance may be provided to Pakistan until Dr. Shakil Afridi is freed.
    • S 3259 provides  relief of Dr. Shakeel Afridi.
    • HR 3901 provides for the relief of Dr. Shakeel Afridi.
    • HR 4069 awards a Congressional Gold Medal to Dr. Shakeel Afridi.

    January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Human trafficking involves the illegal transportation of women, children, and others across borders for illicit purposes. (Learn more about human trafficking.) We pulled together a list of bills relating to the issue.

    Issue Spotlight: Human Trafficking

    • HR 2730 The Strengthening the Child Welfare Response to Human Trafficking Act improves the child welfare response to trafficking by strengthening the child welfare system to identify, document, and counsel children at risk of exploitation.
    • HR 2801 The E-SAFETI Task Force Act establishes a task force for the purpose of studying and making recommendations to prevent and combat internet-facilitated human trafficking.
    • HR 2982 The Human Trafficking Reporting Act includes human trafficking as a "part 1 violent crime" for purposes of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.
    • S 1236 The Tunnel Prevention Act reduces the trafficking of drugs and to prevent human smuggling across the Southwest Border by deterring the construction and use of border tunnels.
    • HRes 508 Supporting the goals and ideals of International Day for the Abolition of Slavery and recognizing the 10th anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations of the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, Supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.
    • HR 915 The Jaime Zapata Border Enforcement Security Task Force Act establishes a Border Enforcement Security Task Force program to enhance border security by fostering coordinated efforts among Federal, State, and local border and law enforcement officials to protect U.S border cities and communities from trans-national crime, including illegal alien trafficking and smuggling, violence, and kidnapping along and across the international borders of the U.S.
    • HR 3253 The International Megan's Law protects children from sexual exploitation by mandating reporting requirements for convicted sex traffickers and other registered sex offenders against minors intending to engage in international travel, providing advance notice of intended travel by high interest registered sex offenders outside the U.S. to the government of the country of destination, requesting foreign governments to notify the U.S. when a known child sex offender is seeking to enter the U.S.
    • S 1301 The Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act authorizes appropriations for the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, and enhances measures to combat trafficking in persons.
