Issue Spotlight: Firearms and Gun Control
Issue Spotlight: Firearms and Gun Control
5/5/13: Last month, the Senate shelved its planned for a vote on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act, which would ensure that all individuals who should be prohibited from buying a firearm are listed in the national instant criminal background check system and require a background check for every firearm sale. As part of this, the Senate had also considered the bipartisan compromise known as the Toomey-Manchin Amendment, which was opposed by 45 Senators.
Senator Manchin, however, is now working to make changes to his Amendment to garner the support of additional Senators -- and to beat a filibuster. And meanwhile, the House version of this compromise has more than 100 cosponsors.

Issue Spotlight: Firearms and Gun Control
Update on bills introduced related to the tragedy in Newtown, CT, and a new federal Assault Weapons Ban
1/16/13: See an updated Issue Spotlight on Firearms and Gun Control for the 113th Congress.
1/2/13: Last month, Sen. Dianne Feinstein announced that she will introduce a new federal Assault Weapons Ban in early January. Since this isn't a bill yet, we created a special page on POPVOX for our users to weigh in on Sen. Feinstein's upcoming bill. Please share your point of view with Congress -- and POPVOX will deliver your message to your Members of Congress, guaranteed.
Several bills were also recently introduced related to the tragedy in Newtown, CT, and firearms and gun control.

Issue Spotlight: Firearms and Gun Control
12/15/12: As President Obama expressed his condolences on behalf of the nation over the school shooting in Newtown, CT, he called for "meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics." (See Saturday's Weekly Address.) House Speaker John Boehner joined the President in sending prayers — and canceled this weekend's Weekly Republican Address "so that President Obama can speak for the entire nation at this time of mourning."
While people across the country are coming together to grieve, a national dialogue has begun on what "meaningful action" should mean. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared: “Calling for ‘meaningful action” is not enough. We need immediate action. We have heard all the rhetoric before.” And among POPVOX users, there's been an uptick in searches for gun and gun-control legislation.
We can expect debate in Congress on what, if any, legislative action is appropriate in response to this shooting - and Congress needs to hear from their constituents on this issue at this critical time. (POPVOX will deliver your letters to your Members of Congress.) POPVOX is highlighting related legislation already proposed, and will continue to update this list.
On behalf of the POPVOX team, our thoughts are with everyone touched by this tragedy.
