  13. Today's Bill Picks and TTB - Outdoor Sports Protection Act (9/28/11)

    Good morning and thanks for checking out Today's Bill Picks. And as you can see by the title of this post, I've taken the liberty to make "Top Trending Bill" into an acronym: TTB!

    But first, a quick Government Shutdown Update : Senate leaders struck a deal Monday night that is intended to avert a government shutdown. Under a last-minute arrangement reached by the two parties, the Senate approved a bill, 79-12, that would fund the government for six weeks, through Nov. 18 ( source ). Now, looks like the House will sign off by unanimous consent on Thursday, on part of this deal, which would extend federal funding through Oct. 4 . Then, when the House returns next week, they will consider the six-week spending bill ( source ).

    • The President's Plan for Economic Growth and Deficit Reduction to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction according to the Administration, "pays for the President’s jobs bill and produces net savings of more than $3 trillion over the next decade" and brings the deficit to a "sustainable level" by 2017.
    • H.Res. 25 : Expressing the sense of the Congress that the current Federal income tax deduction for interest paid on debt secured by a first or second home should not be further restricted.
    • The National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act (HR 822) provides a national standard to carry concealed firearms in other states
    • The  Emergency Deficit Reduction Act (S 552) reduces the Federal budget deficit by creating a surtax on high income individuals and eliminating big oil and gas company tax loopholes
    • The  Defense and Deficit Reduction Act (HR 413) reduces the budget of the Defense Dept. to the level provided for FY 2008 and freezes it through FY 2016
    • H.Con.Res. 72 : expressing the sense of Congress that any legislative language approved by the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction should not reduce benefits for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid recipients
    • The National Guard Basic Allowance for Housing Equity Act (S 1579) provides the basic allowance for housing in effect for a member of the National Guard is not reduced when the member transitions between active duty and full-time National Guard duty without a break in active service
    • The Innovate to Deliver Act (HR 2967) enhances the long-term profitability of the United States Postal Service through enhanced innovation, operational flexibility, workforce realignment, and regulatory relief
    • H.Res. 403 : Honoring those persons whose lives have been taken by bacterial meningitis and those who continue to struggle with bacterial meningitis and its consequences, and supporting all work for the eradication of bacterial meningitis in the United States

    • Samuel B. Moody Bataan Death March Compensation Act (HR 309) provides compensation for certain World War II veterans who survived the Bataan Death March and were held as prisoners of war by the Japanese
