Issue Spotlight: Food and Beverages

While working at a coffee shop in Washington, DC, I asked our interns, Ken and Peter, if they wanted another coffee. It then occurred to Peter that perhaps there are bills in Congress that could affect what we eat or drink. So we decided to spotlight a few of these bills. We hope you'll weigh in on POPVOX and link to this list to share with others.

  • HR 3553 The Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act: amends the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Federal Meat Inspection Act, and the Poultry Products Inspection Act to require that food that contains a genetically engineered material, or that is produced with a genetically engineered material, be labeled accordingly.

  • S 1955 Amends the Solid Waste Disposal Act to require a refund value for certain beverage containers, and to provide resources for State pollution prevention and recycling programs.

Please keep in mind that highlighting a bill doesn't imply a POPVOX endorsement in any way. Rather, we're simply trying to offer one more way to stay informed of an overwhelmingly complex legislative system.
